Blind Spots: Number One Cause of Lane Change Collisions

An average of 200 thousand vehicle collisions is reported to be caused by distractions or blind spots, of which fifty per cent lead to death. Not checking blind spots leads to premature lane changes. Most of these lane changes lead to either a near miss or an actual collision. Near misses are dangerous too. They lead to one vehicle having to make evasive maneuvers, defensively driving to compensate for a mistake and can sometimes result in hitting a structure or another vehicle.

Good drivers are defensive drivers, the best defensive tip when changing lanes is to check your blind spots before acting, however, most of the time that means glancing over your shoulder. This can put the driver and their passengers at risk once more, which can also lead to frontal collisions.

You can prevent this by adding blind spot mirrors which provide the additional perspective to see spots from your seated position without additional driver side movement. Blind spot mirrors or just spot mirrors are curved attachable mirrors normally stuck on side-view mirrors. Because of this curving these mirrors cover a greater area than just blind spots.

The use of blind spot mirrors means being able to see more of the road behind and beside the vehicle – sometimes several lanes away. This can help to effectively prevent the driver from changing lanes indiscriminately. But the most common problem with blind spot mirrors is the inability of the driver to judge distance or size. Their curved design causes objects to appear smaller than what they are or lead the viewer to underestimate the distance from oncoming traffic.

Fortunately, there is a solution with MaxiView blind spot mirrors, designed to give the driver a more realistic view of their surroundings. MaxiView are able to do this with a flatter spot mirror encased in a patented adjustable format. Being able to accurately judge oncoming traffic empowers the driver to make better decisions while changing lanes. Aside from giving a superior “picture”, MaxiView blind spot mirrors are anti-glare and fog resistant, great for night driving and less than perfect driving situations.
